May 2006 sees the launch of two new recycling campaigns.

The campaigns, one for Wychavon District Council and the other for Malvern Hills District Council are very different, but both share the common aim of encouraging recycling and waste minimization in their areas.

The campaigns have been created in partnership with Welcome to Our Future and Severn Waste Services both of whom continue to give ongoing support to recycling in Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

Wychavon District Council – Throwaway the chance to win £100 'Lottery'

The Wychavon ‘Throwaway the chance to win £100’ turns on its head the idea of a retaining a lottery ticket to redeem your prize. Using a card, available as an insert in free local newspapers, the householder writes his or her name and address on the card and throws into their purple recycling sack. Each month a computer selects, at random three WDC collection routes in the district. The computer will then select from residential addresses on that WDC collection route. Depending on the collection week any householder can enter the lottery.

When it is the Purple week the sack left for collection at these addresses will be opened by a representative from WDC observed by an independent scrutineer. If the Purple Sack contains the top portion of this Insert Card filled in correctly and completed by the householder that individual(s) will be the recipients of a £100 prize, one of three £100 prizes given out each month to help encourage recycling in Wychavon.

 It’s that simple.

The campaign supported by press advertising, local radio spots and retail posters runs until March 2007.

So there’s time for everyone to ‘Throwaway the chance to win £100’

Malvern Hills DC ‘It’s in the Bag’ Schools Recycling Campaign

The Malvern Hills District Council Schools Recycling Service starts in May 2006 and covers over 50 schools, both primary and secondary.

To raise awareness of recycling in school (and at home) and the new MHDC service, a teaching support pack was designed. This provided a range of material to help the school and individual teachers promote the idea that rubbish is a three dimensional problem, that has to tackled by everyone.

The packs, contained in recycled jute bags, were promoted as ‘It’s in the bag’ to align with the MHDC collection service which uses the Clear and Purple Sack System.
